India’s retail sector is one of the largest contributors to the country’s employment and economic growth, marking it as a promising gateway for crucial economic mobility. In a context where far too many people struggle to find steady employment, upskilling individuals for employment in the business sector is not simply about strategy, but about furnishing them with the requisite opportunities for success.
According to a 2023 report published by the World Bank, almost 24% of the Indian youth were found to be involved in neither education and nor employment and training. The Economic Survey 2023-24 further reveals that of those with college graduation degrees, only 51% appeared to be job-ready, leaving the socio-economically disadvantaged individuals who make up for a substantial portion of the remaining half without opportunities for economic progress. The lack of access to structured training and resources results in the youth from these backgrounds not being able to pursue further education and employment, which ensures that they remain stuck in repeating cycles of poverty.
The need for more accessible skilling programs is thus urgent. Because of the sheer size of the retail sector in India, it has the potential to be a significant source of employment in today's economic landscape. Retail jobs specifically require a strong foundation in interpersonal skills, professional levels of communication, and adaptability to change. These skills can thus be imparted to individuals from underserved communities, in order to enhance their prospects of securing employment for themselves, and thereby begin their journeys towards financial independence. This is because retail positions are not simply a means for a steady paycheck, but they are also crucial in inculcating vital skills that open up avenues for career progression across a variety of sectors. Recognizing such requirements, the Kolkata Skilling Club (KSC) aims to not only address existing gaps in the context of employment opportunities in India, but also foster self-reliance and dignity in individuals from vulnerable communities. Through thoughtful and diverse initiatives, KSC hopes to reimagine India’s skilling landscape and contribute towards making it more inclusive for the future.
